Expert care for Church of England buildings across the South East
Quinquennial Inspections for Churches in the South East
A Quinquennial Inspection is the essential five-yearly “health check” for your church building. For Church of England churches, this inspection is not just good practice—it is a legal requirement under the Ecclesiastical Measure, helping PCCs fulfil their duty of care for these irreplaceable historic buildings.
We have been serving churches across Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and neighbouring counties since 1972. Our experienced team understands that each church is unique, with its own history, community, and challenges.
From your first enquiry through to the delivery of your comprehensive report, we guide you through every step of the process. Our aim is to make the inspection straightforward and reassuring, giving you a clear understanding of your building’s condition and the actions needed to preserve it for future generations.
What Happens During a Quinquennial Inspection?
On inspection day, our architect will carry out a thorough visual examination of your church building, both inside and out. This includes checking the roof coverings, rainwater goods, external walls and masonry, windows and glazing, doors, floors, ceilings, and internal finishes—all from ground level and any safely accessible areas.
We take detailed photographs and notes as we go, and we always record any areas that could not be safely inspected. We also consider accessibility, safety features, and drainage where visible.
The outcome is a structured written Quinquennial Inspection report that prioritises repairs and maintenance into clear categories:
Experienced Inspecting Architects for Historic and Listed Churches
Our architects are RIBA-chartered professionals with decades of specialist experience in church conservation and listed building work. We hold the qualifications and accreditations required to inspect churches of all grades, including Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings.
We understand the expectations of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) and the wider legal framework surrounding Quinquennial Inspections. Our reports are written to meet diocesan standards and to support any future faculty applications you may need to make.
Above all, we are sensitive to the heritage, liturgical use, and community life of each church we inspect. We understand that church budgets are often limited, and we provide practical, prioritised advice that helps you plan ahead realistically.
Think of us as a “family GP for your church building”—building a long-term relationship over multiple inspection cycles, getting to know your building intimately, and helping you care for it over the decades to come.
